Porthos...

Do you do any home studio recording or just squeeze in demo time when you can?

I'm looking at getting a Marshall Condenser mic (MXL 2003) which I was told by a guy who builds mic diaphragms is a really inexpensive jem. One of the best mics out there for a fraction of the price of a Neumann.

I'll likely get a tube preamp to power it (warm up the vocals for digital recording) and I'm looking at the Presonus TubePre.

I'll post back after I acquire said goodies.

Well Porthos... I took the plunge.

Marshall MXL Pro Pac Plus and...
recording pac big

Studio Projects VTB1 Tube Preamp.
180360

Simple, straightforward, and of extremely high quality for the money.

The pro pack has the Marshall MXL 2003 and 603s mics along with cables and shock mounts for each.

The Marshall mic by itself lists for $399... but you can usually get it for under 200.

I got a special deal with both mics and the whole kit for $250. The Studio pre is normally $179... I got it for $99.

All in all, a ton of quality considering that a Neumann mic can run between $2,000 and $3,000 by itself.

Here's a PDF Review of the 2003 mic. The review even comments how the mic performs right there with mics that are 5 to 10 times more expensive. An engineer I know who works for Crown gave me the heads up on this little known jem. The 2003 is the only 3 micron thick, 27 mm diaphragm in a price range that's filled with slower, less responsive 6 micron, 20 mm diaphragms.
